Siggraph - Day 1

Sunday, August 5th, 2007

I made a turnaround trip to San Diego so that I could attend a half-day talk by PDI, “The Evolution of Shrek.” This talk covered the changes in the tools and technology that they used throughout the three Shrek movies. I paid particular attention to the character and simulation parts of the talk.

It is always amazing to me how most companies are doing the same things. But “how” they are doing these things varies wildly depending on pipeline, past experiences and technical philosophies.

It was a good talk! I really liked their coverage of the evolution of their hair tools and the “magnets” they built to allow animators to move large portions of the hair, which were then used as a goal for the simulation.
